Iris Dina Gunnarsdottir
My artwork is based on a critical exploration of gender roles where video installations, as well as photography, are my primary mediums. My intention with my work is to blur the lines of gender roles so in order to remove the preconceptions society in the western world has about gender identity.
“The Interviews” is a video installation built around audio recordings of interviews that I carried out on the topic of gender equality. In the video installation, I take on the role of both the interviewer and interviewee, miming the audio and mimicking the body language of the participants. In the video, I am wearing a grey suit to strip back any personal traits so easier to take on other personalities/genders.
I also make series of self-portraits; my idea is to illustrate personal characteristics that I see in myself, which also includes the suit that I wear in my video installation - this is inspired by the 1920s artist Claude Cahun who created work about self-exploration through photography.
